It was an historic weekend in terms of Orcas attendance at the Claresholm Kraken Invitational on June 8th and 9th. The Orcas were in full force as 83 swimmers competed in the meet. They shattered the 5-year-old record of 70 swimmers at this Claresholm meet from 2013. The Orcas have been well represented at meets this year. They have set two club attendance records in the first two meets, as 51 swimmers at the Brooks Invitational (first meet of the season) marked the first time more than 50 swimmers had gone from the club. Will the Orcas continue their high attendance for the rest of the season? In addition to such strong attendance, the Orcas were able to capture the Gross Points title, marking the 21st consecutive Region F meet win.
Orcas Attendance at the Claresholm Invitational over the past 5 years is a great visual representation of the recent growth of the club!
With such high numbers in attendance, there were bound to be a few best times. A total of 157 individual best times were racked up by Orcas swimmers. Leading the charge, achieving best times in 100% of their individual swims were: Carson Clamp (6), Alex Ginther (6), Ari Grover (5), Taj Grover (7), Tarak Grover (6), Bryn Hamer (12), Reese Martindale (7), Hannah Murtagh (6), Jaxon Nault (12), McCall Nault (10), Calla Nunweiler (6), Joel Odorski (40), Reid Pinder (5), Devlan Sheppard (14), Jayda Tymko (10), and Alexa Weighill (10).
Tarak Grover (left) and McCall Nault (right) were 2 of the 16 Orcas who achieved best times in 100% of their individual events
In addition to the best times, 16 aggregate medals were earned by Orcas swimmers across the various age groups. Medal winners were:
Riley Ginther – Silver
Alex Ginther – Gold
Andie Smith – Silver
Taylor Ginther – Gold
Jayda Tymko – Bronze
Petra Tymko – Gold
Ottavio Lutterotti – Gold
Lily Petry – Bronze
Olivia Bos – Bronze
Devlan Sheppard – Gold
Charlotte Vanden Elzen – Bronze
Ethan Boras – Bronze
Tyson Chomiak – Gold
Caileigh Sheppard – Bronze
Keeley Watt – Gold
Josh Adams – Gold
Taylor Ginther (left) ripped some really fast swims to win the gold aggregate in the girls 7-8 category and lower her own club record in the girls 7-8 50 backstroke. After a negative experience with the sun on his legs two weeks ago, coach Josh Adams (right) battled through the burn to win 4/4 events and gold in the boys 18&O category
The Claresholm Invitational was the second of three meets that Region F swimmers could attempt to qualify for Swim Alberta Winter Club Summer Championships as part of the ASSA All-Start Team. In order to qualify, swimmers must obtain a Championship Time Standard, a feat most winter club swimmers find challenging after training 9 months for. Last week in Brooks, with 6 weeks of training, Jens Watt (16) qualified in the 50 breaststroke. Tyson Chomiak (15) booked himself a spot on the all-star team this weekend, reaching the time standard in the 50 freestyle. Summer Championships run July 28 – July 1st in Calgary. Qualifiers will get a chance to race in an Olympic length pool (50m) against Alberta’s best winter club swimmers. Chomiak will be racing the 50 freestyle, 50 backstroke, and 100 freestyle. Watt has not confirmed attendance at the meet yet. A few other Orcas will be trying to qualify this weekend in Pincher Creek.
Two club records were also broken this weekend. Andie Smith (8) broke a 12-year-old record in the 25 butterfly in a time of 19.24. The old record was actually held by coach Keeley Watt, who went 19.54 back in 2006. Taylor Ginther (8) broke the other record in the girls 7-8 50 backstroke. She lowered the record she set last year (47.57) to a time of 46.40. Both of these girls will be looking to continue to lower their records throughout the rest of the summer!
Many Orcas have started off with really great season’s. Quite notably, there are currently 5 Orcas swimmers who are undefeated in individual races. Three of these undefeated swimmers have competed in 2 meets (8 individual races), while the other two competed for this first time this season in Claresholm (4 individual races). The current undefeated Orcas swimmers and the events they have won are:
Tyson Chomiak (15) – Boys 15-17
Brooks: 50 Fl
Claresholm: 50 Bk
Ottavio Lutterotti (10) – Boys 9-10
Claresholm: 25 Br
Devlan Sheppard (14) – Boys 13-14
Brooks: 50 Fr
Claresholm: 50 Fl
Petra Tymko (10) – Girls 9-10

Claresholm: 50 Bk
Keeley Watt (20) – Girls 18&O
Claresholm: 50 Bk
Carson Clamp (left) accepts advice from undefeated coach Keeley Watt on way to getting best times in 100% of his swims. Another solid meet for Charlotte Vanden Elzen (right) who won bronze in the girls 15-17 category. Look for these same thumbs up Friday in Pincher Creek when she races the 200, 400, 800, and 1500 freestyle in one night
The Orcas will look to continue their high attendance and great performance this weekend (June 15-16) at the Pincher Creek Invitational. Other important dates to look out for is the Orcas home meet on June 23rd which will be at the University of Lethbridge pool.
