The Lethbridge Orcas were able to add 2 more gross titles to their meet winning streak with wins in Taber (June 14-15) and Fort MacLeod (June 21-22). In Taber, the Orcas were able to extend the streak to 34 consecutive meets with the gross win. In addition, they were also able to capture the net trophy (points per swimmer), despite having the largest team at the meet. This marked the second straight meet this season that the Orcas have had the highest attendance in the region, but have still managed to accumulate the most points per swimmer. The Orcas followed this up the next weekend winning their 35th consecutive meet in Fort MacLeod. 20 Orcas were able to earn aggregate medals in Taber. Notably, the Orcas swept the medals in two categories – the boys’ open and the girls’ open divisions. In addition, 6 Orcas were able to go undefeated in individual events; they were Tyson Chomiak, Devlan Sheppard, Lily Petry, Elliott Pilsner-Roberts, Taylor Ginther, and Bentley Togo. The complete list of aggregate medal winners from Taber is below. Nicholas Helwig and Hugh Swain (left) prepare for a relay in Fort Mac. At this meet, Hugh earned 4 individual best times and Nicholas had 2! Taya Odorksi (right) was pretty tired after the timing system failed and she had to swim the same race 3 times. She would end up winning a bronze aggregate in the girls’ 7-8 division in Fort MacLeod. In addition, they are lots of fun because you get to race with your friends rather than against them. These included two Orcas sweeps in the boys’ 15-17 and girls’ open categories. As with the Taber meet, a number of Orcas were able to go undefeated to win gold in their categories. Those Orcas were: Owen Guyn, Kira Armstrong, Olivia Bos, Lily Petry, and Bentley Togo. Notably, Bentley Togo and Lily Petry are undefeated in individual swims so far this season, both racing at 4 meets and 16 individual swims. The complete list of Fort MacLeod medal winners is below. Kira Armstrong, Olivia Bos, and Lily Petry (left) all went head-to-head-to-head in the 200 IM. Although they finished 1-2-3 in this heat, the three girls were competing in different age categories. Each of them went undefeated to claim the gold aggregate in their respective categories. Annie Edwards (right) won bronze at both Taber and Fort Mac. These were her first two meets as an Orca! In Taber, 9 Orcas were able to contribute to this total as much as possible, earning best times in 100% of their individual swims. These swimmers were: Petra Tymko, Jayda Tymko, Walter Figueroa, Annie Edwards, Jaris Edwards, Josiah Edwards, Brooklyn Filipenko, Arden Matheson, and Audrey Knox. 9 Orcas were also able to get 100% best times in Fort MacLeod. Those 9 were: Jacob Adserballe, Liam Adserballe, Petra Tymko, Jaris Edwards, Isaac Ayley, Tessa Ayley, Lola Caputo, Hugh Swain, and Magdalena Swain. Jacob Adserballe (left) was one of nine Orcas swimmers to swim 100% best times in Fort MacLeod. Jacob’s son, Ben Adserballe (right), won a bronze aggregate medal in Taber and a silver aggregate medal in Fort MacLeod in the boys’ 13-14 division. (Photo Credit: Derek Chomiak) Included below is the top 22 (including ties) of the 2019 Lethbridge Orcas best time leaderboard. Petra Tymko currently leads the way, achieving best times in 15/16 of her individual events so far this season. She is closely followed by a number of Orcas swimmers looking to be #1 on the best time leaderboard. Notably, Jaris Edwards is the only Orca in this top group of best time swimmers who has only attended 2 meets. 8/8 individual best times so far this season has him in the mix with swimmers who have swum twice as many individual events as him. With this in mind, some swimmers are just out of reach at this point. 14 of the swimmers in the top 22 have attended all of the meets so far this year, and with best times coming left, right, and centre, they don’t look to be slowing down. Another honourable mention goes out to Kylie Kozub. At the age of 5, Kylie is one of the youngest swimmers in the club. With best times being not subjective to age, Kylie has made herself competitive with kids 2-3 times older than her on the best time leaderboard. The Orcas will return to action July 5th and 6th in Pincher Creek. As this meet is part of the Southern Alberta Summer Games, it will not count towards the Orcas gross points winning streak. Despite this, you should still expect to see lots of best times and fast swimming!
